Research & fact-finding

Up-to-date answer with sources

Using current information from the web, answer this: [your question]. Give me the short answer first, then the key details, and include links to the sources you used so I can check them.

Compare two options

Compare [option A] and [option B] for someone who cares most about [priority — e.g. price / reliability / ease of use]. Use up-to-date info, lay it out as a table of pros and cons, and finish with a one-line recommendation.

Fact-check a claim

Is this claim accurate: "[paste the claim]"? Check it against current, reputable sources, tell me whether it's true, false or needs nuance, and cite where you got each point.

Research a topic quickly

Give me a quick briefing on [topic] as it stands now: what it is, why it matters, the latest developments, and 3 things a beginner often gets wrong. Keep it under 300 words and link your sources.

Google Workspace

Draft a document in Docs

Draft a [document type — e.g. project proposal / policy / one-pager] in Google Docs about [topic]. Audience is [who], tone [formal / friendly], length about [word count]. Use clear headings and a short summary at the top.

Build a Sheets formula

In Google Sheets I want to [what you want to calculate]. My data is in columns [describe columns and ranges]. Give me the exact formula, explain what each part does, and mention one common mistake to avoid.

Analyse data in Sheets

Here is a table from a spreadsheet: [paste the data]. Summarise the key trends, flag anything unusual, and suggest 2 charts that would show the story best. Then give the steps to build them in Google Sheets.

Summarise a Gmail thread

Summarise this email thread into the key decisions, open questions and who owns each next step: [paste the thread]. Then draft a short, polite reply that moves things forward.

Outline a slide deck

Outline a [number]-slide presentation on [topic] for [audience]. For each slide give a title, 3 bullet points, and a one-line speaker note. Aim for a clear story I can build in Google Slides.

Analyse images & files

Describe a photo

Look at the image I've attached and describe what's in it in detail. Then tell me [what you need — e.g. what plant this is / what's wrong with it / a caption for social media].

Extract text from an image

Read all the text in this image and type it out exactly, keeping the structure (headings, lists, tables) where you can. If anything is unclear, mark it as [unclear] rather than guessing.

Explain a chart or screenshot

Explain what this chart is showing in plain English: [attach the image]. What's the main takeaway, what are the numbers, and is there anything misleading about how it's presented?

Summarise a PDF or document

Summarise the attached document for me: the main points, any decisions or deadlines, and anything I should be cautious about. Keep it to a short bulleted list, and quote the exact line for anything important.

Everyday & planning

Plan a trip

Plan a [number]-day trip to [destination] for [who's going] in [month]. We like [interests] and want to spend around [budget]. Give a day-by-day itinerary with a mix of must-sees and downtime, and note anything to book ahead.

Plan meals for the week

Create a 7-day dinner plan for [number] people. Preferences: [diet / cuisines / things to avoid], about [time] to cook on weeknights. Give each recipe in a line, then a combined shopping list grouped by aisle.

Make a learning plan

I want to learn [skill] and I can spend [hours] a week for [number] weeks. Build me a week-by-week plan with small milestones, free resources, and a simple way to check I'm making progress.

Plan an event

Help me plan [event — e.g. a birthday dinner / team offsite] for [number] people with a [budget] budget. Give me a checklist with timings, a rough budget breakdown, and a few ideas to make it memorable.

Get better answers

Improve my prompt

Here's a prompt I want to use: "[paste your prompt]". Rewrite it so it's clearer and more specific, and add any details you'd need to give me a great answer. Show the improved version, then ask me for anything still missing.

Ask me questions first

I want help with [task]. Before you answer, ask me up to 5 questions that would change how you'd approach it. Wait for my answers, then give me your best response.

Set a role and format

Act as [role — e.g. a careful editor / a patient tutor]. Help me with [task]. Respond in [format — e.g. a numbered list / a table], keep the tone [tone], and flag anything you're unsure about instead of guessing.

How to get more out of Gemini

Gemini is at its best when you play to its strengths: it can pull in current information from Google Search, work alongside your Google Workspace apps, and read images, PDFs and documents you attach. For research, ask it to cite sources and click through to confirm anything important — it's a fast first pass, not the final word. For Docs, Sheets, Gmail and Slides, tell it the audience, tone and format you want, and paste in the real data or thread. And when you're not getting a great answer, ask Gemini to improve your prompt or to ask you questions first — a little back-and-forth usually beats one long request.

FAQ

Is Gemini connected to Google Search?
Yes. Gemini can pull in current information from Google Search, so it's well suited to questions about recent events, prices and facts that change over time. Ask it to include links or cite its sources, then click through to confirm anything important.
Can Gemini read images and files?
Yes. You can upload a photo, screenshot, PDF or document and ask Gemini to describe it, pull out the text, explain a chart, or summarise it. Be specific about what you want back and it will focus on that.
