Real math symbols, not lookalikes

It's tempting to type x for multiply or <= for less-than-or-equal, but the proper symbols (× and ≤) read more clearly and look professional in documents, homework and posts. Copying them is faster than hunting through an insert-symbol menu. A couple of distinctions worth knowing: the minus sign (−) is a different, slightly wider character than the hyphen (-), and the multiplication sign (×) is not the letter x — using the correct ones matters in anything typeset carefully. For Greek letters often used alongside maths (π, θ, Σ), see the Greek letters page.

FAQ

Is the multiplication sign the same as the letter x?
No. The multiplication sign (×) is its own character, wider and centred. Using the letter x looks off in proper notation, so copy the real symbol when it matters.
How do I write fractions like ½?
Common fractions (½ ⅓ ¼ ¾ ⅔) exist as single characters you can copy from above. For arbitrary fractions, most word processors have an equation editor, or you can write them inline as 3/8.
