Navigation is the big win

As in any spreadsheet, the shortcuts that change how Google Sheets feels are about moving and selecting. ⌘/Ctrl + arrow jumps to the edge of a block of data, so you can reach the bottom of a long column instantly; hold Shift too and you select everything along the way. ⌃/Ctrl + Space selects the whole column and Shift + Space the whole row — the fast way to format or delete an entire column without dragging.

Entering data quickly

A few keys make data entry far less tedious. ⌘/Ctrl + ; stamps today's date, ⌘/Ctrl + D fills the cell above down into your selection (perfect for copying a formula down a column), and ⌘/Ctrl + Enter confirms an entry across a whole selected range at once. Alt + Enter (Option on Mac) adds a line break inside a cell, which keeps notes tidy.

Differences from Excel

If you've come from Excel, most habits carry over, but Google Sheets adds a few of its own. ⌘/Ctrl + / opens a searchable list of every shortcut, and many menu actions have a quick "tell me what you want" entry via the Help menu. Note that some Excel function-key shortcuts don't exist in the browser, replaced by Ctrl-based equivalents. If you also use the desktop spreadsheet, compare with the Excel shortcuts to spot the differences.
