Understand & explain

Explain a concept simply

Explain [concept] to me as if I'm a complete beginner. Use a simple analogy, define any jargon, and give one concrete example. Then ask me one question to check I understood.

Explain at three levels

Explain [concept] at three levels: one sentence for a child, a short paragraph for a high-schooler, and a precise technical explanation for a university student.

Find the gap in my understanding

Here's my explanation of [topic]: [paste your explanation]. Point out anything that's wrong, missing, or oversimplified, and correct it clearly.

Summarise & organise notes

Summarise notes into key points

Summarise these notes into the 7-10 most important points, in plain language and in a logical order: [paste your notes].

Turn notes into flashcards

Turn these notes into question-and-answer flashcards. Keep each question short and each answer to one or two sentences. Notes: [paste your notes].

Build a study outline

I'm studying [subject] for [exam or goal]. Create a structured outline of the subtopics I need to cover, ordered from foundational to advanced.

Practice & test yourself

Generate practice questions

Create [number] practice questions on [topic] at [easy/medium/hard] difficulty. Mix the question types. Don't show the answers yet — wait until I've answered.

Quiz me one question at a time

Quiz me on [topic]. Ask one question at a time, wait for my answer, tell me if I'm right, and briefly explain. Gradually increase the difficulty.

Create a practice exam

Write a practice exam on [topic] with [number] questions worth [total] marks, similar in style to [exam name]. Include a marking guide I can check my answers against afterward.

Feedback & writing

Get feedback on an essay

Give me feedback on this essay for [class/level]: [paste essay]. Comment on structure, argument, clarity and evidence. Be specific and suggest concrete improvements, but don't rewrite it for me.

Improve a thesis statement

Here's my thesis statement: [paste it]. Suggest three stronger versions that are more specific and arguable, and explain what makes each better.

Studying with AI without cheating yourself

The trap with AI study help is letting it do the thinking for you — which feels productive but doesn't move anything into your memory. The prompts here are built the other way around: they make the assistant explain, question and test rather than just hand over answers. Ask it to quiz you one question at a time, to explain a concept and then check your understanding, or to critique your essay without rewriting it. The effort of recalling and answering is what actually builds learning — use AI to create that effort, not to skip it.

FAQ

Do these study prompts work with any AI?
Yes — they're plain-language templates that work with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others. Pick whichever you have access to.
Will using AI to study count as cheating?
Using it to explain concepts, quiz yourself or get feedback is a legitimate study aid. Submitting AI-written work as your own usually isn't — check your school's policy, and lean on the prompts that make you do the thinking.
